2. EITA!

Whenever you hear it, embrace yourself, love, cause things are about to get intense…
Today’s one is one of my favourites, wowing enough without being rude or in usage of bad words. A very family-friendly not-even a curse, for those moments of a little pike of astonishment when you gotta let it out, but not much.
It might look just like a little word, but that eita has a lot of meaning and building emotions within it. It’s an interjection used to indicate surprise and express a reaction in the face of an unexpected situation, and my best interpretation for it is the holy moly. Not always a bad thing – but usually is – yet a shocking thing.
There is no literal translation to it, no equivalent word, I’m afraid. When I tried Google, it gave me Jeez, which is not bad, but it doesn’t encapsulate the whole deal of eita. I particularly love using it at those oh, shit moments, not easy enough to be an oh, well neither tough enough to be an oh, fuck.
With time eita got an enormous number of variations, specially with intensifying bits, in cases one wanted to make sure it’s being used for a not so pleasant surprise.
Eita porra (forget the not cursing, we add the cursing at the end to make sure things have gone down… Advise is to run as soon as the expression is heard);
Eita lasqueira (very regionalized, lasqueira being of the same family as lascado, lascou-se, witch could mean screwed, but the expression became a pretty much a non-cursing way of demonstrate excitement… when you love to watch it burn);
Eita ferro (we add a ferro in the end, which means iron, which makes no literal sense at all, but the new expression is more in the tone of perplexity before an imbroglio than the others);
And an infinity of neologisms – another very Brazilian characteristic – adding qualities to make the expressions even better describers of feelings and emotions.
Considering today is elections day around here, eita sounded very appropriate for the scenario, either case.
Till, tomorrow
