9. IDEIA DE JERICO

You see, I don’t consider myself any brighter than the average person, but even I can see a clearly obvious bad idea when it presents itself. Like tattooing the name of your girlfriend/boyfriend after the first date. Terrible idea! “Donkey idea!”

Yes, the donkey… We talked about it the other day as being a stuck-in-place animal, now we’ll talk about its of intelligence deprivation.

Around here, when you want to say that someone is stupid, a moron, not the brighter spark in the book, you call them “burro”, which is a synonymous of “jerico”, and “jegue” and it all means the poor donkey.

I’ve lost count of how many times I called my brother that, growing up, and in my defence I’m the smart one, he’s the strong one, we good. But he’s still the one who pops in my mind when I think of “ideia de jerico”, never met someone so prone to bad ideas.

So, “ideia de jerico” is basically a stupid idea. Like the Jerico Race that happens in the north of the country, and despite the name, is a race of poorly manufactured cars – if you can call them cars. Highly unsafe. Very good example of “ideia de jerico”.

Funny enough, a “ideia de jerico” is usually what’s going to lead you to that situation when you say: “onde eu fui amarrar meu jegue”. It’s always the donkey.

I remember my mom used to say it was a “ideia de jerico” when my dad would transport their two children in this wheeled trunk towed in his motorcycle all around the town. Can’t say she was wrong, I’m glad we’re alive, but... damn! That was fun!

So maybe not all donkey ideas are bad, some are just dangerously unsafe, but fun! So I guess is a matter of you weighing the risks and the fun and deciding which one you want to follow.

I mean, Mr. Fiancé thinks my dream of skydiving is a donkey idea, and of course I strongly disagree. The same way, he strongly disagrees with my opinion of his dream of swim with sharks being a donkey idea.

Seems pretty particular to each person, this one.
